FG says universities can reopen when COVID-19 guidelines are in place

The federal government has said universities in the country can resume classes once they have put the necessary COVID-19 guidelines in place.

The statement was made by, Suleiman Yusuf, the deputy executive secretary of academics for the National Universities Commission (NUC), at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, August 4, Premium Times reported.

He said the commission is working with universities to discuss preparations that should be in place before reopening of the tertiary institutions.

Another official of the NUC, Abubakar Rasheed, who serves as the executive secretary of the commission stated that the agency is already collecting data from universities to assess their preparedness to resume academic activities. He also disclosed that the NUC is trying to mediate with the Academic Staff Union of Universities’

(ASUU) to resolve the strike by university lecturers. Legit.ng recalls that the Nigerian government closed its tertiary institutions along with lower schools in March due to the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, the federal government has disclosed that it has begun disinfecting 19,000 unity schools as students head back to classes.

Mohammed Mahmood Abubakar, the minister of environment, speaking in Kaduna said that the decontamination is in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, Daily Trust reported. He revealed that this will be done immediately after the Eid-el-Kabir break, adding that personnel will be mounting surveillance in some of the exam centers.

The environment minister stated that the disinfection will begin with federal government colleges and then schools that will host the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). According to Abubakar,

the ministries have put in place a sustainable system that will protect the health of learners and their caregivers at all educational levels. While urging parents to ensure that their wards are properly kitted with face masks during the examination, the minister reassured them of the safety and well-being of the students.
