Senate Screens NPC Commissioner-Nominees

Nigeria’s Census History and Challenges
Nigeria has not conducted a census since 2006, when the NPC estimated the population at 140 million. The previous administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari had scheduled another census for 2022, but later postponed it to 2023. However, Buhari suspended the census indefinitely before leaving office, saying he would leave the decision to his successor, President Bola Tinubu.
President Tinubu has recently expressed his support for the next census, saying it is vital for various aspects of national planning. He has also urged the NPC to work with other stakeholders to ensure a successful and credible census.

Senator Ningi Calls for Political Will and International Support
Senator Ningi stressed that conducting the census requires political will and commitment from the government. He said that Nigeria has not complied with the United Nations resolution on population, which recommends a census every seven years. He said that the NPC and its staff are ready to conduct the census, but they need the President to announce a date and secure international support.
He said that without the President’s declaration, no foreign donor would fund the census. He added that 75% of the logistics, such as machines and training, have been completed. He urged the President to have the political will and commitment to say the census is taking place and cannot be postponed.
Senator Ningi Highlights the Importance of Census for Development
Senator Ningi also emphasized that the census is the basic foundation of human development, and that without it, no plan can be implemented. He said that it is difficult to know the exact population or the proportion of Nigerians because of the lack of political will. He said that the population issue is a priority, and that all efforts are being made to ensure its takeoff.
He advised the nominees to realize the importance of their assignment, and to see themselves as Nigerians. He said that the last time Nigeria had a national census was more than a decade ago, and that no nation can improve or develop without knowing its number. He said that the nominees have been selected because of their pedigree, experience, and exposure to the system.
He said that the census is not about competition or comparison among ethnic groups, but about developing a mechanism to lay a developmental plan that will meet the aspirations of the people.
NPC Chairman Expresses Readiness for Screening
Earlier, the NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, said that they had been waiting for the screening for a long time, and thanked God that they were finally here.
