Meta Removes 10 Million Fake Facebook Accounts in 2025 Crackdown on AI Spam and Content Theft

In a major move to restore trust and protect user experience, Meta has eliminated over 10 million fake Facebook profiles in the first half of 2025.

These accounts were primarily involved in impersonation, fake engagement tactics, and unauthorized reposting of content — practices that harm the platform’s integrity and genuine creators.

This large-scale cleanup is part of Meta’s intensified strategy to combat "AI slop" — mass-produced, low-quality or stolen content generated by bots or automated systems. Such spammy material often clogs feeds, spreads misinformation, and undermines authentic engagement.

To further support original creators, Meta is currently testing advanced attribution tools designed to track viral content back to its rightful source.
